Mukesh Kumar’s time in domestic cricket proved to be a valuable learning experience, highlighting the work he still needed to do to reach the highest level of the game.
His impressive performances, particularly in the Ranji Trophy, caught the attention of selectors, earning him a spot in the India A and Team India squads for home ODIs against South Africa last year. While he is yet to make his international debut, Mukesh had the opportunity to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year, representing the Delhi Capitals in his debut season. Following the IPL, he also joined the Indian team as one of the standby players for the recent World Test Championship final at The Oval.
In terms of numbers, Mukesh’s performance in the IPL was not extraordinary, with seven wickets in ten appearances. However, the experience gained from playing for the Delhi franchise and being in the company of Team India members during their England tour has put him in a “wonderful” state of mind.
Reflecting on his IPL experience, Mukesh acknowledged the intense pressure of the tournament. He noted that facing teams with several strong batsmen, unlike in international cricket, added to the challenge. Even if he made early breakthroughs, the quality of opposition batsmen meant he had to remain fully focused, as there was no room for complacency. Going through the grind of the IPL has made him confident that he will sharpen his skills not only in the next IPL season but also in the matches he plays throughout the year.
While Mukesh’s impact in the IPL was modest overall, he did play a crucial role in one of the Delhi Capitals’ victories. He executed his yorkers and wide yorkers effectively to defend 13 runs in the final over against the Sunrisers Hyderabad back in April.
Regarding his time with the Indian team in England, Mukesh expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from established players and the coaching staff. He specifically worked on a delivery targeting the fourth-stump line, aiming to create confusion in the batsman’s mind about whether to play the ball or leave it. Mukesh sought guidance from the bowling coach, Paras (Mhambrey), and hopes to execute this strategy better in the future. Additionally, he made the most of the training sessions during his time with the team, recognizing it as an invaluable opportunity for his development.
Mukesh’s performances have earned him a spot in the East Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, and he is also a contender for a place in India’s squad for the Test series against the West Indies next month. Although he acknowledges the possibility of selection, Mukesh is focused on his game and not preoccupied with thoughts of being picked.
